Celebrating Citizen Science Month – April 2026

April is Citizen Science Month – a great opportunity to recognise the important role everyday people play in helping protect and understand our natural environment.

So, what is a citizen scientist? Simply put, it’s anyone who contributes to scientific research in a voluntary capacity. You don’t need a science degree or specialist training – just curiosity, a willingness to observe, and a desire to make a difference.

The beauty of citizen science is that anyone can get involved. Whether you’re a local resident, a regular beach walker, a bushcare volunteer, or a family looking to spend more time outdoors, you can contribute valuable information that supports environmental research and conservation.

At MBBA, many of the activities we already participate in are part of broader citizen science efforts. These include:

  • Reporting invasive species through the Weed Spotters Network
  • Participating in local dune monitoring
  • Research projects
  • Monthly bird counts at BA46
  • Water monitoring
Dune monitoring with drones – Javier Leon

We also encourage people to take part in activities like

  • Taking part in FrogID Week by recording frog calls
  • Contributing to BirdLife counts by observing and recording bird species

Each of these activities helps build a bigger picture of ecosystem health, species distribution, and environmental change.

Citizen science projects provide real benefits. They:

  • Support scientists and land managers with large-scale data collection
  • Help detect environmental changes early
  • Strengthen community connection to local natural areas
  • Empower people to actively care for their environment

Most importantly, they show that small contributions add up to meaningful impact.

This April, we encourage everyone to see themselves as a potential citizen scientist. Next time you’re out in  the bush or along the beach, take a closer look – your observations could help protect the very place you love.
