Alpinia caerulea – Native Ginger

Alpinia caerulea, a rainforest understory plant, is a good native plant choice for the gardener wanting to create a tropical look. It grows to three metres and will form a clump, but is not weedy like the yellow-flowered Kahili ginger that is native to India. Our native ginger has white flower spears to 10cm in spring and summer followed by decorative dark blue fruit. Best grown in moist areas with dappled sunlight, this plant will flourish in the right conditions.
